Rome

Rome is not only the Capital of Italy; it is a city rich in history, culture, art and music.  It is the largest and most populated area of Italy and is home to the famous Vatican City and Colosseum.
With such a long history, Rome was founded by Romulus in 753BC and was occupied by the Gauls for a brief period in 386BC.  It then became a republic in 509BC.
One third of the Roman population was killed by the Antonine Plague from 165 – 180AD.  Later on the Bishop of Rome became the Pope and made the city the center of the Catholic Church.
Rome was taken by Byzanine and Germanic people after the fall of Western Roman Empire in 476AD.  756 saw the Papal States being created when the Pope was given jurisdiction.  Rome remained the Papal States right up until 1870.

While still under the Popes rule, Rome became the Capital of Italy in 1861, but it wasn’t until 1870 when the Franco-Prussian war broke out that the Italians eventually captured Rome.

Rome is home to over 900 churches, 39 monumental fountains and 9 aqueducts.  It has ancient bridges, museums, theatres and parks that can be enjoyed while visiting the area.

A day of leisure can be enjoyed at some of the beautiful parks in the city; Pineto Regional Park and Appian Way Regional Park are the most visited in the area.

When it comes to churches and cathedrals, there are so many to see, from Saint Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, Piazza Novona, Basilica of St. John Lateran, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and Apostollic Palace.  Each is an architectural marvel, showing their influences over the ages.
