Travel with kids: even road trips can be fun! Travelling with kids doesn't have to be so daunting. With a little planning and extra preparation, even a long road trip can be fun!
If your travel plans involve long stretches in the car, it helps to bring along entertainment for the kids. If you're renting a vehicle, considering choosing a car with a built-in entertainment system so that your children can watch DVDs while you drive. Alternatively, bring along a hand-held, portable gaming system like a Sony PSP or Nintendo DS Lite. Just make sure the batteries are charged! For a cheaper option, consider borrowing an audio book from your local library. Harry Potter is always a hit.
If you can, try to take a vehicle with lots of cabin and luggage space. The more space everyone has the happier they'll be. Avoid car sickness by keeping the vehicle cool and clean, cracking the windows to relieve cabin pressure and packing a few snacks and drinks to settle upset stomachs. Many children find that sucking on a candy helps with motion sickness. Just make sure the candy doesn't pose a choking hazard. Gumdrops and lifesavers make good options.
Finally, plan your route before you go. Your children will need to take breaks more frequently than you normally would and it helps if you know where the rest areas are.
