Vienna, Austria (known as Wein in German) is the largest city in the country, as well as the capital. The Danube river canal flows through the city's northeast sector, and the central inner city (the first district) is bounded by the famous Ringstrasse. Vienna's summers are usually pleasant and warm, while the autumn months are often windy and cloudy.
Much of Vienna is amenable to exploration on foot, but the public transportation system, which incorporates commuter rail, trams, buses, and an underground, is excellent. Popular visitor sights include the Schönbrunn Palace, which was the Habsburg summer residence, the Baroque masterpiece that is the Belvedere Palace, and the Hofbibliothek, one of the most impressive libraries in the world. For a taste of Vienna's famous pastries and tortes, Demel in the first district is a delicious choice.
Most visitors to Vienna prefer to stay in the city's central district, which offers a wide range of hotels. In general, hotel prices here are a bit lower than in European cities to the north. The high-end luxury properties are most likely to be found on the Ringstrasse. Non-smoking rooms are in limited supply in most of Vienna's hotels, so reserve one early if this is your preference. |
