Washington D.C. Capital of United States of America
Washington D.C. is the capital of the US and was founded on 16 July 1790. This city hosts the headquarters for the World Bank and 176 embassies.
Washington D.C. was burned in August 1814 during a raid by British forces that destroyed the White House and the Treasury, to name a few of the buildings destroyed. The rebuilding was only completed in 1868.
Population increased during the American Civil War in 1861 due to the federal government’s growth and the freedom of slaves. The assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in 1968 caused riots in Washington D.C. which continued for three days, as rioters burned shops and buildings. It was the 1990’s when the rebuilding was eventually completed.
Washington D.C. is home to some of the most famous architectural masterpieces namely the White House, the Washington National Cathedral, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. All of which must be seen when visiting the area.
Washington D.C. is such a cultural rich area and there are so many museums and galleries to enjoy when walking the streets of this bustling city. Home to the Smithsonian Institute gives visitors the ability to soak up some culture at the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of American History.
The Smithsonian Institute is also home to the Sackler Gallery and the Freer Gallery. But if you love art, then also be sure to visit the National Portrait Gallery and the Renswick Gallery.
The Washington Monument is placed in the center of the National Mall and is a must see for any tourist while visiting this city, while a walk through Chinatown can excite you.
The John F Kennedy Center for Performing Arts hosts performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera and the Washington Ballet. If you are planning an elegant night out, then this is definitely the place to visit.
